The Kansas Nebraska Act was an act proposed by Stephen Douglas which was the senator of Illinois. The act allowed territories to chose whether they wanted to be a slave or free state. This process was done through popular sovereignty which meant that anyone who live in the territories could vote on the state's status. The act was controversial because many people moved in large numbers to sway the voting. This lead to many fights between pro slavery and abolitionist supporters.

The 1860 election was the presidential election number 19 and the main candidates were Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, John Bell, and John C. Breckenridge. One of the main topics of these presidential debates was the topic of slavery and whether it should keep expanding into the western states. Although Lincoln did not show up in many southern states, he still won the election. The election was controversial because the southern states thought Lincoln would try to take their slave, so they decided to leave the union and formed the confederacy.
