- Pauls returns to war from visiting his family. In order for him to get back in the frontlines along with some of his comrades. He has to go back into basic training just so he doesn't get too comfortable from being at home. Paul would stay here and train for battle and he noticed that a russian prison camp was right next to the basic training camp. Paul decided to take a look and went inside the prison
- When Paul stepped in, he found russian prisoners that have been captured. They've pretty much given up on life because they know they are going to die. Paul feels bad for these people because he knows that he can't save them. Paul can realte to this prisoner because he was starving without food at one point.
- Paul didn't see these russians as his enemies. He's so open hearted that he decides to share some of his belongings with them. He went to the cells and started off by giving each of the prisoners a cigar. Paul knew how to play the piano so he let them listen to music. Finally he gave away some of his favorite potato cakes that were made by Paul's mother
