- The fransciscan fathers has entrusted an indigenous man named cantuña with the construction of a church in Quito that of san Francisco. He accepted and set a deadline of six months in exchange he would receive a large amount of money
- Cantuña accepted the deal, he only asked Lucifer for one condition, that he finish the construction of the church as quickly as possible and that absolutely all the stones be placed.
- Although it seemed like an impossible feat to finish it in six months, Cantuña put his greatest effort and determination into finishing it, he gathered a team of indigenous people and set out to finish it. However, the building was not progressing as he expected. In those moments of anguish, Lucifer appeared to him and said: “Cantuña! I'm here to help you. I know your anguish. I will help you build the incomplete atrium before the new day appears. In exchange, you will pay me with your soul."
- Lucifer, astonished, saw how a mere mortal had deceived him. Thus, Cantuña saved his soul and the devil, feeling mocked, took refuge in hell without taking his pay.
- When the devil went to Cantuña to take his soul, he stopped him with a timid voice, Wait a moment! – said Cantuña. The deal has been broken! You offered me to place every last stone of the construction and it didn't happen that way. A stone is missing. The native had taken a rock from the construction and secretly hid it before the demons began their work.
- However, he seemed desperate because the imps were advancing very quickly, just as Lucifer offered. The work was completed before midnight, it was then the right time to collect the high price for the construction: the soul of Cantuña
