- Amelia E. Johnson est née sur 1858 en Toronto, Canada. Elle a été éduquée en Montréal avant de déménager à Boston en 1874. Elle a épousé Reverend Harvey Johnson, le pasteur de la Union Baptist Church.
- Amelia E. Johnson a commencé publié les histoires courtes dans les journals tel que Le Messager Baptiste, Le Baptiste Américain, et Notre Femmes et Enfants magazine. Puis, en 1887, elle a commencé un magazine prénommé La Joie, quel a inclus les histoires sont destinés aux jeune filles Afro-Américaines. Elle a suivi ça l'année prochaine en créer Le Lierre, un autre magazine quel plus s'est concentré sur se répandre conscience de l'histoire Afro-Américaine.

Johnson, she wrote Clarence and Corinne in 1890, which was the first book written by an African American and the first book written by a woman to be published by the American Baptist Publication Society of Philadelphia. She then went on to write The Hazeley Family in 1894 and Martina Meriden in 1901. Today, her writing is praised for focusing on the social circumstances of her characters rather than any identifying racial characteristics, yet still connecting with a Black audience.
