  • Mahatma Gandhi born October 2nd 1869 to humble beginnings in the coastal town of Gujarat, India his father Karamchand was a chief minister and his mother Putlibai was a very religious woman. These conditions Mahatma Gandhi was born into would greatly Influence him into changing the very society and even the world around him.

  • As A child Ghandi was said to be shy and mediocre in academics but showed a strong sense of honesty and discipline no doubt instilled to him from his mother. At 13 years old he was arranged to be married to a young girl who was also 13 named named Kasturba Makanji

  • In 1988 Gandhi went to study law at the University College London even though his community and family told him not to go this experience would be vital for Gandhi so he could start up his legal practice as well as helping him fight for justice in the only way he knew how at the time.

  • In 1893 Gandhi was shocked by the rampant racism in south Africa Gandhi experienced extreme Racial discrimination for the first time.

  • This incident became a turning point in young Gandhi's life he had seen and heard of racism before but had never experienced it like this

  • Gandhi returned to India in 1915 where he became a central figure in the countries fight for Independence from British rule his experiences in south Africa taught him of nonviolent resistance (Satyagraha) Eventually becoming a leader in the Indian national congress

  • In 1917-1918 Gandhi led his first major campaign in Champaran, Bihar where he supported farmers for growing indigo in exploitative conditions
  • We must stop paying these British taxes and quit growing indigo for the British

  • Gandhi then led his second biggest movement in 1920-1922 called the non cooperation movement where he called for citizens to boycott British goods many Indians even gave up British titles and quit government jobs
  • from now on we adopt Khadi instead of paying for British textiles

  • Gandhi's Greatest accomplishment was his Salt March protesting the salt tax the British imposed
  • We Cannot pay for British salt we are being unfarly taxed
  • Though this protest ended violently Gandhi Still was able to cost the British millions allowing for greater social reform and allowing the Indians to be free of British rule
