- Amir is walking to Hassan's house to set him up and make it seem like Hassan stole his birthday money and watch. He's doing what he thinks is right to get rid of Hassan and Ali since Amir knows Hassan is loyal to him, he knows Hassan will get in trouble. He is doing this in hopes of relieving his guilt.
- Betrayal
- Amir is placing the watch and envelope underneath Hassan's mattress and planting it so it looks like Hassan stole it. He is taking advantage of Hassan's loyalty to help make himself feel better about his guilt. He thinks that getting rid of Hassan and Ali will solve all of his problems and so he's willing to betray Hassan.
- Amir, Baba, Hassan, and Ali all meet in Baba's study to discuss what happened. Here, Hassan makes the ultimate sacrifice and admits to stealing the money and watch to protect Amir. This shows how even though Amir betrayed him, Hassan is still loyal and cares about him. While Baba says that he forgives Hassan, Ali says they should still leave which upsets Baba. However, he can't change their minds and later Hassan and Ali leave in the rain. The rain symbolizes the sadness that everyone feels and how Amir feels like his guilt is washing away as Hassan and Ali leave.
