Something they can't do
Something that Jude can't do is fit in/make friends because of the color of her skin. In chapter 4, Bennett mentions how when Jude entered high school, the bullying didn't bother her as much as the loneliness did, "She sat by herself at lunch, flipping through cheap paperbacks. She never received visits on the weekends, or invitations , or phone calls just to see how she was doing"(Bennett 88). Jude didn't ever have anyone to sit with during lunch, so she just read instead. When others were planning activities or being social, she was always left out.
Jude is a quiet girl that keeps to herself and doesn't really engage with other people. In chapter 4, Bennett talks about how the people on the bus would perceive Jude, "A girl from nowhere and nothing, and if you'd asked any of the other passengers, they would have noticed nothing
interesting about her except that she was so, well, black. Aside from that, quiet"(Bennett 81). She didn't have any sort of personality because she wasn't able to comfortably express herself because of the town she was in. The main thing that drew attention to her was her skin color, which made it difficult for her to become her "own person" and come out of her shell instead of always being known for her darkness.
What kind of person are they?
What does the character think about?
One thing that is Jude thinks about frequently is Stella. In chapter 10, Bennett talks about how Jude's constant thoughts of her absent auntie caused her to not focus on school, "Of course she couldn't lose her scholarship. She was just a little distracted at the moment, nothing too serious. She would shake out of it. But she didn't, because everytime she tried to study, she only imagined Stella"(Bennett 211). No matter how hard Jude would try to stop thinking about Stella, she just couldn't help it. She had been told stories about her when she was younger and always wanted to know what she was like. After the interaction they had together at the party, it was hard to keep Stella off her mind.
