  • In The Monsters Are DUE on Maple Street by Rod Serling one of the main themes is that mankind is its own worst enemy. First of all, at the beginning of the story, everyone starts jumping to conclusions because Tommy says there could be a creature around them who looks like a human, and they all turn on each other when in reality they could have just not believed the Tommy because why would you believe a comic book turning into reality. Another example is when they all go to Mr. Goodman's house and his car starts and his lights turn on and is the only one who has power so they all jump to conclusions and gossip about him having an insomniac then they think he is the creature and don't jump to anyone else being the creature so they focus on him and the second more gossip happens they will think more people are the creature and at the end of the day everyone could be a creature and then they go back to where they started and they will all turn on each other. Lastly, someone shoots someone thinking it is the creature and that's when everyone turns on each other and destroys them Selfs. In conclusion, Mankind is its own worst enemy because the creatures didn't even have to do much, they all turned on each other and destroyed themselves on their own.
