- Kids have to live downstairs and NO laughing
- Gosh, things have gone downhill a little since we were here last(Walls 134)

- The Walls family arrives in Welch and they meet Rexes mother, Erma, who has many rules
- Dont run!(Walls 141).
- Mom and Dad take the kids for a ride to see the town. The town is very old with buildings that are covered with black coal dust and the streets are very quiet.

- Jeannette and Brian are enrolled in school where they get put into special classes because of there accents. At lunch, some girls come up to Jeannette bullying and punching her.
- Welcome to home sweet home(Walls 150).
- Jeannette helps a little, scared boy that ends up being the neighbor of the girl Dinitia, who beat up Jeannette. Dinitia then stops beating up Jeannette and befriends her.
- Jeannette catches Erma touching Brian inappropriately and gets angry with her. Lori tries to calm everyone down, but that angers Erma and then Lori and Erma break into a fist fight.
- Erma kicks the Walls family out of the house because of the fight and dad finds a new home for them in Welch with no indoor plumbing.
