  • As the SMNI presidential debate continues, Mr. Ang, the CEO of The Manila Times was the next panel to ask the candidates about an issue he had in mind.
  • Good Evening, my question is about the public discourse on the West Philippine Sea and how it often glosses the interest of the smallest stakeholders. Now, If elected president how would you look after the welfare of small fishermen who are occasionally harassed by foreign vessels in controversial areas with competing territorial claims like Vietnam, Taiwan, and China.
  • May I, add my stance on this foreign dispute? In my opinion, with all the issues that we must talk about with China. We should prioritize this problem so that fishermen could get back on the sea that they’ve already been occupying since a hundred of years ago. We could explain to China that boats aren’t military threats that is why warships aren’t in the said place. Second, our nation could ask for help from ASEAN and the UN as they could deploy delegates to talk with President Xi Jinping. In this way, the conflict would be fixed and would never happen again.
  • China’s claims over our territories have been a large problem, especially with our fellow fisherfolks. I think that we should use our win over in the international tribunal and be allied with countries that are also being harassed by China in Southeast Asia. This could push different nations in UNCLOS to forbid and restrain China from further maligning our country. Furthermore, I suggest the need to use Economic diplomacy so that we could pressure China to allow our fisherfolks in the West Philippine Sea. Since first of all, the land is totally ours.
