Punjab, a region in Eastern Pakistanis experiencing severe water scarcity. Despite receiving a significant supply from dams, rivers, and other sources, the shortage of water is a major challenge that Punjab is facing
The region comprises three seasons. Summer starts from mid April-end of June; rainy season lasts from early July-end of September (70% of rainfall happens in this season) ; Winter is experienced during the months of early December- end of February. The average rainfall in Punjab is 53.5 cm during the years 2015 to 2019.
The poor water quality and presence of toxic heavy metal may be linked with the prevailing health issues in this region. Droughts are expected to occur every 5 years, and the hazard level may increase in the future due to the effects of climate change.
With the loss of agriculture, farmer livelihoods have been declining, resulting in a record of number of farmer suicide. Other than that, women are suffering multiple miscarriages or remain infertile due to rusty colored water.
By getting free electricity they overuse the ground water resource and this led to depletion of ground water level in the Punjab. The state government has started to map Punjab’s extensive water resources and plans to study the feasibility of sourcing drinking water from tapping surface water sources. They have also decided to focus on a comprehensive crop diversification model which would perhaps shift the pressure away from groundwater. and made a paradigm shift in its policies to prioritize availability of safe and clean water for drinking and irrigation purposes.
