  • "The Powder Keg of Europe"
  • The balkans peninsula was referred to the powder keg because of rising tensions between major european powers and ethnic rivalries between the balkan people. Austria-Hungary had taken over bosnia and accused Serbia of subverting their rule
  • In June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited the Bosnian Capital, Saravejo.
  • Declaration of War
  • Gavrilo Princip was a member of the serbian nationalist group The Black Hand, upset by Bosnia's remarks against serbia he exacted revenge by killing their archduke and representative as well as his wife.
  • This caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, Austria thought this was going to be a quick war but because of the alliance system, the war lasted way longer. On August 1 Germany was obligated by treaty to support Austria and declared war on Russia because they were allies with Serbia, and then on August 3rd they declared war on Russia’s ally France. After Germany invaded Belgium, Great Britain declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. This marked the begging of WW1, formally known as the war to end all wars.
