- The researcher then asked the participants for a few names of fellow students and then presented the cover story.
- The cover story was that a researcher was experimenting with sensory deprivation on brain function but the participants who originally took part in it had horrible side effects of hallucinations.
- The participants in Bocchiaro's study had to write a statement to convince the students that they previously had named to partake in the experiment and the statements would be sent in the mail
- The experimenter left the room for 3 minutes so the participant could reflect on what they wanted to do
- The participants were then moved to another room where there was a computer to write their statement, a mailbox and research committee forms. They were told to be enthusiastic and had to use two out of 4 exciting adjectives.
- The participants were left for 7 minutes to either write the statement, disobey it completely or whistle blow if they believed it was unethical and put a form in the mailbox
