- Katniss and Gale are best friends who live in District 12.There are 12 districts and the Capitol. Gale and Katniss hunt illegally to feed their poor families. Gale suggests they leave the district, but Katniss refuses. She thinks about her family and how they need her.Every year, 2 children (one on each gender) are selected from each district to compete in the Hunger Games, which is in the Capitol. 24 children will battle to the death in an arena constructed by the Capitol. District 12 hardly ever wins, so being selected ensures death.
- At the reaping, Katniss's sister, Primrose, who is twelve, is chosen. In shock, Katniss volunteers herself as tribute, because she does not want her sister to die. The male tribute is Peeta Mellark, a boy she owes her life to. When her family was starving, he gave them bread.
- The Capitol is a high technology place, ten times better than the districts. They are spoiled in riches before their Hunger Games. At training, Katniss shoots an arrow at the gamemakers, and surprisingly they like it. She gets a very high training score, 11, which is better than the Careers (the kids from the wealthy districts who have trained for this all their life). To get sponsors, who will give you food in the games, you must impress them at the interviews. Cinna, Katniss's stylist, creates a beautiful dress for her to wear. When she spins, it looks like a flame. She becomes known as the girl on fire.
