  • the power of government should be limited and ourrights as people should be protected.

  • The Seven Years War
  • during the 18th century, a movement [the Enlightenment] emerged in Europe. The movement was of thinkers who valued reason and science above faith or authority as a basis for society.
  • No taxation without Representation
  • Britain wanted a cheap supply of raw materials for its expanding industries and saw America good for this. They did not want American competition for its industries. The British Parliament passed the Navigation Acts forcing some colonies to sell some products to Britain alone. The British could decide the price leading to smuggling and clashes with the British navy
  • The Boston Massacre
  • stop implementing so many taxes on our goods
  • During the 7 years' war [1756-1763] France had settled colonies in North America, the British had defeated the French and seized a lot of their territory. The war also meant that Americans had gained military experience fighting against the British Army.
  • The Boston Tea Party
  • The Stamp Act was introduced in 1765, all legal documents, wills, newspapers, certificates etc.. required a government stamp which had to be paid for. Quartering Act [1765] imposed taxes to cover the cost of soldiers in colonies. Colonists were furious and created Opposition groups using the slogan 'No taxation without Representation'. Protests and violence against the 'Stamp Men'

  • After the Stamp Acts the British instead imposed the Townshend Acts [1767], placing taxes on goods imported by America [tea, glass, paint and lead.] Tension built-up and in 1770 a Boston Mob protesting confronted the British Soldiers. They opened fire and killed 5 people, Boston Massacre. Exaggerated accounts spread claiming the soldiers used extreme violence towards the citizens.
  • After the Boston Massacre The British Withdrew all the acts except except tax on tea imports to show they had the right to tax the colonies. in 1773, passed the Tea Act exempting the East India Company from paying the tea tax. In December 1773 a group from the Sons of Liberty dressed as Native Americans and dumped 342 crates of East India Company tea into Boston Harbour [Boston Tea Party]
