- On December 8, 1941, only ten hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan launched a surprise invasion on the Philippines. Following an initial aerial bombardment, ground forces were landed both north and south of Manila. General Douglas MacArthur, who had been recalled to active duty in the United States Army earlier in the year and had been appointed commander of the United States Armed Forces in the Asia-Pacific region, oversaw the defending Philippine and American forces. His aircraft were destroyed, the naval forces were told to withdraw, and due to the conditions in the Pacific, it was impossible to resupply and reinforce his ground forces. The defending forces fled to the south under the pressure of the greater numbers.
