  • Sure, This means.....
  • Emily, could you explain this question for me ?
  • Why they never call me with my name? Maybe they are worried to pronounce it wrong?
  • You could call me Claire, that is my English name.
  • Oh, Yu..ing? I need your e-mail address.
  • I like Chinese food too~Claire, do you know any good Chinese restaurant around here?
  • Claire! I have a cousin her name is also Claire and she loves Chinese food.
  • Yes! There is one at uptown, do you guys want to have a try?
  • Let's go~!
  • After that class, I found out that, my English name helps me be more identifiable by my peers.
  • Looking at languages accent in general, Chinese is considered to a very tonal one. The slightest miss-altering of the tone of a given name completely changes the meaning of the word. Having a English name could make the conversation easier for both international students and America students.
  • After knowing the difference between using a Chinese name and an English name, I am going to interview five of my friends of why they choose to have an English name.
  • Victoria(Luyao Bao) 18 years old
  • Malenie(Xing Li) 19 Years old
  • Why you guys changed your names?
  • We joined Christianity family last year, and the baptismal event require them to change the name. I felt I was fully accepted by the community.
  • In fact, Islamic students who decide to join Christianity are asked to adopt a Christian name, and this would makes them feel being part of the community.
  • I can understand that.Different religious practices are present in English states. I am so gald to have you two here today.
  • Kevin (Kaiwen Wang) 18 years old
  • Hi,Kaiwen, I know you are a sophemore in college, so what do feel when you introduce yourself as 'Kevin'.
  • I get the feeling that I am all equal in any American institutions and can participate fully in all areas.
  • Helen(Yuxuan Wang) 17 years old
  • Jacob(Yitong Zhang) 20 Years old
  • All my friends call me as Helen, they know I have a Chinese name, they like both of them.
  • Hi my friends, are there any specific reasons for you two to have an English name?
  • Well, I think an English name reduces my recurrent worries that my complicated names could be an obstacle to me to be accepted as the part of the community.
  • After doing the interview, I get the idea that The Chinese students also seek to adopt English names to be fully assimilated into the new western cultures.
  • By them changing their names, they get the sense of belonging and thus their self-esteem are built. An English name could help Chinese students to get involve in Western community and culture.
  • There are also many views have been put forward to warn students against changing their names.
  • They are going to lose their inheritance, culture, origin as well as it is an abomination.
  • Students should be encouraged to stick to their real names since they are unique. By using real name, one can easily understand the cultural practices you originated from.
  • For that, I want to show you guys two of my real experiences which took place in China and America.
  • In USA
  • Hey Claire Yan, you came from China right?Could you help me translate this Chinese word into English?
  • Sure!
  • In China
  • 我听说你有英文名字。(I heard that you have an English name?)
  • Yes, it is Claire. I studied in America.
  • That's great! We are going to have a meeting tomorrow which would have some English speakers, would you want to be a translater at there?
  • Of course,absolutly!
  • Having an English would not let us lose our cultural identity. Actually, One could express their region directly from their face and their last name.Changing names by Chinese students who are joining Western countries for studies is of great importance.
  • For all above, an English first name would help Chinese students who may study, work or plan to immigrant to America to have a better and easier life in an English-speaking country.
  • Thank you for watching~bye~
