- The Hobbit Chapter 1
- "Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort."
- "Hobbits have no beards. There is little or no magic about them, except the ordinary everyday sort which helps them to disappear quietly..."
- Bilbo Baggins is the main hobbit we are concerned with throughout the novel.
- Bilbo's mother was Belladonna Took. Her side of Bilbo's lineage is known for being adventurous, not like most hobbits. She gives Bilbo his adventurous spirit that he will later discover.
- This is Bungo Baggins, the father of Bilbo. He is the more typical hobbit that emphasizes family, comfort, and wants nothing to do with adventures. This is where Bilbo gets his Baggins mentality from.
- "... Bilbo Baggins was standing at his door after breakfast smoking a pipe that stretched down to his wooly toes and Gandalf came by."
- Gandalf has come to propose an adventure to Bilbo which, at first, he wants no part of it. " We are plain folk and have no use for adventures." This is our first introduction to Bilbo's "Baggins side" of his mentality.
- After Bilbo returns inside, Gandalf precedes to place a mark on the door.
- Later that night, dwarves started to arrive at Bilbo's house and were expecting a feast.
- After dinner, Thorin and Gandalf gathered for a smoke and to prepare for their journey to the lonely mountain to reclaim their gold.
- Bilbo was intrigued by their conversation. ..."the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hand and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and a jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves. Then something Tookish woke up inside him..."
- Shortly after this, Bilbo headed to sleep feeling all types of emotions, not knowing that his life would be forever changed.
- We chose this chapter because it is the first time the readers can start to see a change in Bilbo's mentality. Bilbo has started to feel his Tookish side come out. This is Bilbo's most important transformation because it sets the stage for all he will face throughout the journey.
