  • Antagonist
  • Jacob is a 16 year old boy who would always listen to his grandfather's stories. These stories consisted of the impossible (floating girls and invisible boys), so as Jacob got older he didn't believe in them anymore although there were picture to go along with the stories. One day, Jacob gets a call from his grandfather rambling on about a key, so he goes over to his house to visit him. Once there, he finds his grandfather dead in the woods. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees a creature but blames it on his imagination.
  • External Conflict
  • Jacob, a 16 year old boy, is the main protagonist in the book. He is shy person and doesn't have many friends. The friends he does have aren't close to him. He comes from a wealthy family. Jacob loves his grandfather and when he died, Jacob became a different person. He was diagnosed with acute stress reaction (because of the monster he claimed he saw). He is determined to prove that the monster he saw killed his grandfather.
  • Rising Action
  • Wights are monsters that live in outside to loop. They can get into the loop once they find the entrance, but ymbrynes hide the entrance well. The wight that is important in Dr. Golan We don't know his real name, but Dr. Golan is the one the characters use. His job (set by the hollowgasts) is to capture Miss Peregrine. The peculiars spot a wight by their eyes; wights do not have pupils.
  • Climax
  • The hollowgasts and wights are out to get the peculiars, Jacob, and Miss Peregrine. At this point in the book, we've found out that Jacob himself is a peculiar. The hollowgasts and wights want to use all of them on an experiment that failed many years before (which turned them into what they are). They think they have found the answer. Dr. Golan has stolen Miss Peregrine and the peculiars must get her back.
  • A mysterious ornithologist shows up to the island where Jacob and his dad traveled to (His dad has been in the background. During the day Jacob is in the loop and his dad is outside trying to write a book). Through a chain of actions, the peculiars (and Jacob) and Miss Peregrine find out that he is a wight who wants to kidnap (or eat) them all. The peculiars go through the loop into present day to figure out how a mysterious murder happened. They come to believe that it was the wights' fault. That's when he finds them and threatens to eat them. The peculiars escape, but not in time for Miss Peregrine to get kidnapped.
  • Inside the lighthouse, Jacob, Emma, and the wight have a battle. Jacob and Emma are trying to get Miss Peregrine back from the wight. Although the wight can eat them, he uses a gun and almost shoots them. He wants the peculiars gone and just the ymbrynes (female peculiars that can control time and change into a certain bird. They watch over the younger peculiars).
