  • George Washington was inaugurated on April 30, 1789 in Virginia. He would set the precedent for those who would follow. Then his first job was to put a working government into place.
  • The Whiskey Rebellion 
  • When Washington took office the federal government was deeply in debt and they owed $52,000,000. The situation was very complicated because the federal government
  • Problems with NW Territory
  • "You promised that you would leave your land!"
  • The federal government would agree to pay back all of the state and federal debts. Hamilton wanted to prove to everyone that the U.S. would and could pay back all of its debts. The U.S. government would start a national bank and government funds could be deposited and they would issue a common paper currency for the people/citizens. The government would impose a tax on all imported goods. And it would raise money and this was the only way for the U.S. to get approved by congress.
  • French Revolution
  • To raise money congress imposed a tax on all whiskey that was made and sold in the country many backcountry farmers refused to pay the tax so, they went and burned down a home of a tax collector. Washington responded by sending a militia to stop the uprising. It was the first even to test the will of the Gov. and show that the americans had an armed rebellion.
  • The British promised to leave their forts. The americans bought land from the americans on the NW territory and then they won more territory North and West of the Ohio River.
  • The French rev. began in April 1789 it was a lot different from the American Revolution because it focused on destroying the unfair class system and the rule of kings that existed in France. The three main causes of the war were a financial crisis, Economic Depression, and Enlightenment/ Age of Reason
