  • In an attempt to fix problems with Britain Washington sent John Jay to try to solve the problems with Britain. He returned with a treaty that made the U.S. agree to pay back all the debt. Britain agreed to withdraw it's troops from america. Then Britain agreed to pay for the ships, but they refused to recognize a U.S. trade with France, but the americans were unhappy about it though.
  • The XYZ Affair
  • "You will have to bribe us with $250,000"
  • In Washington's farewell address he offered three main pieces as advice to the american people. The first one is to protect the Union and stay together, next stay out and off European Conflict, and last that the President should only serve two terms.
  • Alien & Sedition Acts
  • There are two major political parties today Democrats and Republicans. They were first referred to as factions. Political parties began as a result of disagreements between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.
  • Midnight Appointments
  • When Adams was president they had some problems with France, so Adams sent Charles Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridae Gerry to France to try to solve the problems. The americans were met by what they called XYZ (three French agents). XYZ demanded $250,000 bribe in order to see the French minister.
  • The Alien act authorized the president to deport any foreign person that came into the country and was a threat. The Sedition Act that no one could publicly criticize the government in any way.
  • In the Election of the 1800s the federalists were annihilated and lost control of both parts of congress. In the passing of the Judiciary act of 1801 president Adams and Congress lead the fed. courts system with fed. judge positions
