- Denial is one of the most common defense mechanisms. It occurs when you refuse to accept reality or facts. Situation: My mom kept on existing that I have a crush on this guy and I kept on denying it (even though it was true hehe).
- Sublimation
- She's so full of herself. I'll hit the racket with all my anger, then.
- Unsavory thoughts, painful memories, or irrational beliefs can upset you. Instead of facing them, you may unconsciously choose to hide them in hopes of forgetting about them entirely.Situation: Ever since my father died, I've been anxious that my mom would suddenly die as well. I always
- Projection
- Why won't you allow me to go with my friends? You always do this to me, mom.
- Displacement is a psychological defense mechanism in which a person redirects a negative emotion from its original source to a less threatening recipient. Situation: My classmate got angry with me because the teacher scolded him.
- I didn't do anything!
- The teacher scolded me because of you!
- This type of defense mechanism is considered a positive strategy. That’s because people who rely on it choose to redirect strong emotions or feelings into an object or activity that is appropriate and safe.Situation: I was so annoyed with my cousin that I played badminton with force.
- Projection is a defense mechanism that involves taking your own unacceptable qualities or feelings and ascribing them to other people. Situation: My mom won't allow me to go with my friends since her mom back in the day was strict to her as well.
- You're lucky that you can even talk back to me. If nanay was your mom, you'll already be out in the streets, homeless.
