  • The three food groups in a cheese sandwich are: Carbohydrates (this is found in the bread and gives us energy). Proteins (this is found in the cheese and helps us grow) and Fats or lipases (these are found in the cheese and butter, they are needed for energy).
  • In the mouth
  • The cheese sandwich then enters the stomach. This contains hydrochloric acid which kills the harmful bacteria on the food. The stomach contains protease, amylase and lipase which break down food molecules which are then absorbed in the small intestine. When the food leaves the stomach it is covered in a substance called bile, which is made in the liver and this is an alkaline which neutralises the hydrochloric acid.
  • Down the oesophagus
  • oesophagus
  • The food is now in the small intestine which contains the enzymes amylase, protease and lipase. The food is pushed along by small hairs called villi into the large intestine.
  • About the cheese sandwich
  • Carbohydrate
  • As the cheese sandwich goes into your mouth, the teeth and jaws work to break down the food into smaller pieces. This makes the food easier to digest. Saliva in your mouth contains the enzyme called Amylase; this enzyme breaks down carbohydrates into glucose.
  • Then the food travels down the oesophagus. The muscles of the oesophagus contract, this movement is called peristalsis, this helps move the food down to the stomach. It can take as little as two seconds to travel down into the stomach.
