  • The North didn't like the South and vice versa. This was due to disagreements about the government, state rights, and slavery!
  • On September 18th, 1850 the Fugitive Slave Act was passed by Congress. This Act meant that slaves would have to be returned back to their slave master's. But, how did we even get to this point?

  • Most slaves were kept in the South, where plantations and agriculture were the most prevalent. These slaves didn't like their treatment on these plantations, so they planned to escape.
  • I'm tired of it here, maybe, we should head North. I heard they are helping people like us.
  • Even though the Fugitive Slave Act became a thing, it didn't mean the North would easily comply. The North worked harder to free slaves, with laws and helping them out! The South got angrier.
  • Most of the North viewed slavery as immoral. Many abolitionists helped slaves escape the South, so they may have freedom.
