"Sheriff Heck Tate: "...movin' him to the county jail tomorrow. I don't look for any trouble, but I can't guarantee there won't be any."
"Atticus: "Don't be foolish, Heck. This is Maycomb."
As Tom Robinson's trial approaches, Scout notices a change in the town's atmosphere. Atticus receives a visit from a group of men, including Sheriff Heck Tate, who warn him that there may be trouble. They are concerned about a possible lynch mob coming for Tom Robinson.

Later that night, Atticus leaves the house, taking a light and a book with him. Jem, Scout, and Dill secretly follow him and discover that he is sitting outside and the jail, apparently keeping watch over Tom Robinson.
Jem: "Don't go to him. He might not like it. He's all right, let's go home, I just wanted to see where he was."
Scout: *about to run*

A group of men arrive at the jail, intending to harm Tom. Atticus remains calm and refuses to move aside. The situation becomes tense as the mob pressures him.
Scout: "Don't you remember me Mr. Cunningham? I'm Jean Louise Finch. I go to school with Walter, he's your boy, ain't he? Ain't he, sir? He's in my grade, He's a good boy. Tell him hey for me, won't you?"
Mr. Cunningham: "I'll tell him you said hey, little lady, let's clear out, let's get going boys."
