- A teenager called Roger which is poor tries unsuccessfully to steal a woman’s purse in a late night in the streets of Harlem in NYC
- It was 11 o'clock at night, when a boy tried to snatch her purse
- WHAT YOU DOING
- Oh no!
- -The woman overpowers him and puts him in a half nelson. Then she brings Roger to her house to punish him and teach him a lesson
- Yes'm
- Now Ain't you ashamed of yo'self, you ought to be my son, I will teach you what is right and what is wrong.
- She put him in a half nelson
- Unexpectedly, the woman treats Roger with kindness, and makes him wash his face, this makes Roger feel confused. The woman then prepared food.
- You go wash your face right now, ain't it late for supper? I can make you supper if you ain't got no one for supper
- Yes'm
- “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?”

- The woman puts her purse on the couch, on Roger’s reach, and loses sight of him for some minutes. Roger wants her to trust him. He doesn’t steal nor run away.
- She left'r purse at my reach. I want her to trust me, I dont want to be like what I was
- Half Nelson
- The woman then eats the food with Roger, and they both talk to each other, the woman tells him about her job, and teaches him a life lesson, that she also had a dark past, and she couldn’t get the things she wanted.
- I worked in a 9 to 5 but I now work from the morning to the late night, I also had a very dark past, I would not tell you, now let's eat.
- The woman then gives Roger 10 dollars to buy the “Blue Suede Shoes” that he wanted, and tells him to not steal from anyone anymore.
- here you have, ten dollars to buy the blue suede shoes, don't steal from anyone every again.
- “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s
- “The woman did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her purse which she left behind her on the day-bed.”
- “I have donethings, too, which I would not tell you, son — neither tell God, if he didn’t already know.
