When Columbus made a second voyage to America Juan Ponce de León tagged along. Once he arrived at the new world he settled on a Caribbean island named Hispaniola. There he became a military captain under the government
Searching for the fountain
In 1506, Juan explored an island named Borinquen. There he heard many stories about gold. He lead soldiers to conquer the island hoping to find golf. He and his men killed many people. Later. he became government of the island.
The settlement
Juan heard of a magic fountain on another island. Stories told of a fountain of youth whose waters were told to make people young again. He asked permission to search the island. He wanted the glory of finding such a wonderful location.
The attack
In 1513, Juan set sail. After a month, he reached a coast with palm trees, sweet smelling flowers, and beautiful birds. He named the land Florida in Spanish. He claimed the land for Spain. He sailed down the coast but could not find the well, so he returned to Puerto Rico.
In 1521, he returned to Florida. He returned to start a settlement. There were two hundred men attending the settlement.
The American Indians attacked during the settlement and an arrow struck in Leon. Wounded, he sailed to Cuba and died shortly. after. He never knew Florida was not an island but part of a vast continent.
