A politician decides he wants to propose a bill to become a law! This may be a long process.
Step 6-7:
The politician is able to take his bill to a Committee. It gets some floor action and several other politicians discuss the bill. It is decided to place another meeting discussing the bill on the calandar.
Step 8:
The day has come, and the bill has been sent to the opposite house to review the bill. It must either be approved or denied. Once it is approved, it'll be sent back to the originating house! If it is denied, it is basically the death of the bill. The politician may try to propose it again in the future, though.
Step 9:
A meeting is held to iron out some differences between the two houses (lots of political arguing!). The final version of the bill will be drafted. Once this is done, a conference committee is held before moving onto the next step.
The bill is voted on one more time in both houses. If it passes both houses, it will get sent to the white house for the President to take a look at.
The President may decide what he'd like to do with the bill. He may either sign it, veto it, pocket veto it, or do nothing with it. If he signs it, it goes into law! If he vetos it, it goes back to both houses of congress and may still become a law through a majority vote. A pocket veto takes place within 10 days of the end of the session of congress. The President decides to sign the bill and it becomes a law!
