  • People under the Old Regime were divided into 3 Estates (social classes). The unprivileged paid taxes and were treated badly, while the privileged did not pay taxes and were treated well. The first estate consisted of high-ranking officials of the church and the second estate consisted of nobles. Both the first and second estate were privileged. The third estate consisted of all the other commoners which were unprivileged. SPICE indicator- Social
  • 1789-1791
  • Due to the expenses of the King and Queen there was a huge debt in France. This lead to an increase in taxes on the Third Estate. This also lead to the influence of enlightenment ideas on the Third Estate. They questioned the divine right of kings and wanted reform.SPICE indicator- Economic
  • 1793-1794
  • A meeting of the Estates General was held by King Louis XVI to solve France's financial crisis. King Louis locks out the Third Estate from the meeting. They decide to meet up on a nearby tennis court and create the National Assembly. The Estate takes the "Tennis Court" oath vowing to implement a new constitution for France. King Louis XVI did not want a written constitution. His plan was to use military force against the National Assembly. When that news reached Paris, angry members of the Third Estate decided to storm the Bastille. This day becomes France's Independence Day. SPICE indicator- Political
  • 1795-1799
  • I will reform France
  • The National Assembly issues the Declaration on the Rights of Man. They also produce France's first constitution. The new government became known as the Legislative Assembly. France became a limited monarchy, feudalism was abolished, and all special privileges of the First and Second Estate were abolished. This new government was unsuccessful, resulting in a power vacuum.   • A new group called The Convention takes over and abolished the monarchy. This resulted in the beheading of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and the start of the Reign of Terror. Those who resisted the revolution or accused of treason were put on trial and tried with execution by the guillotine. 17,000 people were executed making the guillotine known as the "National Razor." The reign of terror eventually ends and The Convention finally inaugurates its new constitution. This results in a new government called The Directory.
  • Under The Directory, Napoleon Bonaparte comes to power ending the French Revolution. Napoleon reforms France while maintaining and spreading many Enlightenment ideas. He establishes the Napoleonic Code which promotes equality of all citizens and religious toleration. He also takes down the King of Spain which leads Spain into losing its power over colonies in South America and leads to independence movements in Spanish colonies in the Americas.
