- Why, yes, certainly.
- Mathilde Loisel marries Monsieur Loisel, who works as a secretary for the Minister of Education. Their lives are not lavish, but neither are they poor, they are just average. Mathilde, on the other hand, aspires to be wealthy.
- One evening, her husband brings home an invitation to a ball, expecting her wife to be excited and happy to attend such an event. Instead, she is upset and throws the invitation complaining that she has nothing to wear to such a grand event.
- I have--I have--I've lost Madame Forestier's necklace
- What!--how? Impossible!
- Even with a new dress, but Mathilde still appears disappointed since she doesn't have jewelry to go with her dress. Her husband suggested that she could borrow something from her rich friend, Madame Forestier. The next day, she goes to see her friend and selects a stunning diamond necklace to borrow.
- The day of the ball came. Mathilde had a fabulous time as she is desired for dances all night. She and her husband finally went home in the wee hours of the morning.
- Once they arrived home, she uttered a cry as she realized that she lost the necklace. Her husband goes to look in the streets, but hours later, he returns empty-handed. He told Mathilde to compose a letter to her friend saying that the necklace clasp had broken and they were getting it fixed.
- They found a similar necklace to replace it. However, it costs 36,000 francs, and the husband only had 18,000 from his father's will. They had to borrow more money to be able to purchase the replacement necklace. Mathilde gave Madame Forestier the necklace without even looking at it.
