Denial is one of Freuds defense mechanisms. This is when an event that occurs is too much to take in for the brain. This causes the person to deny that the event even occured, becuse it might effect them in a negative way.
for example, a man who knows watching tv 24/7 is very bad for him, but chooses to deny that and keeps watching.

SUBLIMATION
Sublimation is when we know an impulse that we want to do is not right, so instead we express that impulse in a different way. For example, this girl wanted a cat, but her parents said no. She wanted to scream at them, but she knew she would get in trouble so instead she screamed into her pillow.
regression is when stressful situations cause you to go back to old habits. These old habits may have provided comfort previously, so when stress takes over, going back to what you did before might provide a sense of safety.
For example, this man is facing stress from work, and an old habit he had was eating. He now has went back to these habits.
Repression is when a memory from the past is hidden from your consciousness because you dont want to relive or remember it. Although these memories are repressed, they will still effect your day to day life without you even knowing.
for example this girl experienced abuse in her childhood, and her brain represses those memories to help with her anxiety.
Jimmy failed his math test which he didnt study for, but instead of accepting that it was his fault he blamed it on his teacher for not teaching well.
Projection is when your own intolerable standards, so instead you blame them on another person.
