  • The person you see here is Nolan Bushnell. He loves to play the video game SpaceWar and he makes a lot of things. He loves SpaceWar so much that sometimes he sneaks out at night to play it.
  • During the summers he works at an arcade. He sees how eager a lot of people are to play video games. Later, he has an idea.
  • Why don't I get a job making video games? The people who made SpaceWar make tons of money. If I can make a game as good as that, then I could get a job making games.
  • Bushnell starts making his video game. First he makes a circuit that would display graphics on an ordinary TV. He then starts working on building his video game, Computer Space, which was licensed to a company called Nutting Associates.
  • Bushnell didn't think that Nutting Associates was a very competent company. However, he let them design it because he said that 'it was clear that these guys were succeeding in spite of being really stupid. There's nothing like being around that to embolden yourself.'
  • In 1972, Bally, a company that made pinball machines, asked him to make a video game. One of his workers, Al Alcorn, made a game about a ball bouncing back and forth on the screen.
  • The game was called Pong, and was released by Atari. It was an instant success and started the golden age of video games. Atari went on to create dozens more successful video games.
  • Avoid missing ball for high score.
