Nick Allen is a 5th grade student who likes to do creative things in class and has lot's of ideas. He is famous for asking questions to waste time. His English teacher Mrs. Granger loves the dictionary. She is also very strict and makes her students follow the school rules.
Nick asks a question about where all the words from a dictionary come from. Mrs. Granger tells him to go home and figure out the answer by himself and write and oral report about it. He then has to present it to the class the next day. Nick goes home and starts researching. Nick realizes that people made all the words in the dictionary and figures he can make his own.
This contract will give Nick 30 percent of the profits!
While doing a contest of who falls off the curb, Janet finds a pen. He didn’t know where he was looking and he accidentally bumped into Janet making the pen fall. He said sorry and said here is your frindle instead of pen. He was making his own word.
Soon this whole thing got out of control. One time the principle came over to Nick's house and had a chat with Nick and his parents. One day a reporter named Judy Morgan came to Lincoln Elementary. She asked the principle and Mrs. Granger about the word frindle and took notes. Judy published a paper about it that made Alice Lunderson, a worker at CBS- TV station come to Nick's house to hear Nick's story about the word frindle.
A business man named Bud Lawrence wanted to make the word frindle into a brand. He decided to make pens called "frindle" and t-shirts with the word "frindle" on it. He asked Nick's dad to sign a contract that would give Nick 30% of all the profits. The pens and t-shirts were very succesful and made Nick's family very rich and famous. Nick does not know this yet because Nick's dad puts in an account for when Nick gets older.
Ten years later, Nick opens the account and is now very wealthy. In the mail, Mrs. Granger gives him a dictionary that has the word "frindle" in it and her favorite pen. She also gives him the letter Nick signed ten years ago. Nick now realizes that Mrs. Granger was supporting him all this time. He mails her a letter thanking her for her support and surprises her by establishing a trust fund for college scholarships with a donation of one million dollars and names it after her.
