  • The Race of the Sperm
  • In the quiet country of Uterus, millions of Sperm(en) have just been ejaculated from Penis Airlines and line up as the Race of the Sperm begin. Egg(oria) has officially been released from Ovary Estate into Fallopian avenue. The first Sperm(en) to reach her and subsequently fertilise and implant with her will be deemed the winner.

  • Ovulation
  • Egg(oria) has been released into Fallopian avenue. Contestants have 24 hours to find her.
  • The process by which the egg is released from the ovaries to get to the sperm is called ovulation. It passes through a tube called the fallopian tube. As the ovum passes through the tube, they have microscopic hairs attached to the fallopian tube that push it through. Ovulation is one of the 4 steps in the menstrual cycle the body takes to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy.

  • Ejaculation
  • Ejaculation is the process in which the sperm(en)/semen leaves the penis and enters the vagina. The sperm first begins in the testicles and moves to the epididymis, vas deferens ejaculatory duct and finally the urethra. After the sperm has entered the vagina, it begins its journey towards the fallopian tubes.

  • Journey (Barriers for sperm)
  • I won't make it. Go without me.
  • On their way to Egg(oria), only about 200 sperm(en) will reach the fallopian tubes. Most sperm get attacked by the female immune system or get lost along the way.

  • Fertilisation
  • Hooray! It seems Sperm(en) Number 122615 has been the first to reach Egg(oria). Fertilisation begins as the two gametes begin to fuse together.
  • Fertilisation is the process which gametes (an egg and sperm) fuse to form a zygote which will eventually become a new individual. This individual will inherit genes from the mother and father cell

  • Implantation
  • Our new Zygote duo have made their way to Uterine Wall lane. Come back in 9 months to see what surprises they might bring! This concludes the annual Race of the Sperm.
  • From the fallopian tubs, the zygote moves towards the uterus becoming a morula. Once it reaches the uterus and becomes a blastocyst, the embryo attaches itself to the uterine walls. Until birth, it remains attached to the walls. This gives the growing embryo the oxygen and nutrients it needs to grow from the mother.
