  • Peasants in Russia lived in extreme poverty, and starvation, with a huge division between rich and poor. They had no rights and couldn’t change their circumstances. They made little pay and work hours were grueling. The rich ran the country.
  • Civil War in Russia
  • We have won the war!!!
  • In March 1917, a group of female textile workers went on strike. Widespread famine, poor working conditions, and a failing military led to soldiers and others to join the riots. This lead to Czar stepping down, and sparks a change in the corrupt government.
  • Actions Taken by the Bulslevicks
  • Because the new temporary government failed, a political party led by Vladimir Lenin became popular amongst peasants, workers, and soldiers. Their famous slogan was, "Peace, Land and Bread." They promised to take Russia out of WWI, peace. Re-distribute evenly the land to everyone, land. And end starvation by producing more food, bread.
  • The Death of Lenin & the Rise of Stalin
  • I shall take over the Soviet Union.
  • Soon after the Bolsheviks took power, Russia broke out into civil war. The two main sides were the Red Army, communists, and the White army, imperialists. The Red Army eventually won the civil war in 1920, as they were more organized. This war caused major destruction across Russia.
  • In 1918, Lenin faced two assassination attempts. The communist government responded with a campaign of mass killings, oppression, and torture called Red Terror, upon all those whom opposed the Bolsheviks. The number of people killed was between 50,000-1.5 million.

  • On January 21, 1924, Lenin died due to a stroke caused by the bullet stuck in his neck from the second assassination attempt. Before passing, Lenin warned the future government of top-ranking communists. One being Joesph Stalin. He believed he had "unlimited authority concentrated in his hands, and told comrades to think of a way to get rid of his application.
