  • Hello I'm Plutarch, I will recount to you Gaius Marius' career and life.
  • -Marius gained political support following his victory over Jugurtha-Despite not being born in a noble family, his family's patronage to the Optimates allowed him to enter military to later become a consul
  • Due to the shortage in soldiers and the incompetency of the military commanders, Marius proposed reforms
  • -Opened military to all Roman citizens (even those w/o land)-Offered to pay and provide land tosoldiers, becoming a soldier became a long-term career (from volunteering)
  • During his time as a consul, he struggled to gain the support of both the senate and plebeians-Relying on force to pressure voters towards his views
  • Cimbri Conflict:-In 102 BCE after have being re-elected as a consul for the fourth time, Marius defeated the Germanic troops
  • This indicates this victory boosted his popularity, Romans became increasingly reliant on him
  • The Social War and the alliance b/w Saturnius and Glaucia threatened Rome-Alliance formed as Latin allies intended to gain power and full citizenship -Under Marius, those who remained loyal to Rome granted the allies w/ full citizenship
  • Saturninus and Glaucia 's alliance threatened Marius' power in the senate -They obtained senatorial power and became candidates through illegal means of violence and murder -Marius sought to exterminate the threat by murdering the two senators and restoring order -Although the outcome lead a reduction in his popularity
  • Ultimately, Marius was a passionate and aggressive individual who thrived as a military commander and helped Rome's senate to adapt to a newly formed Roman Empire. -Opening the army and providing ing land to volunteers and replacing the maniple legion with the cohort unit
  • Marius having been elected a total of seven times layed the foundations for the fall of the Republic, particularly when power was concentrated entarted in the hands of the consul
