- We made it to the last week of school! The students are mentally checked-out. Let's just put on a Disney movie. We all deserve the break!
- Oh, man. I wish we could but that would be copyright infringement! The only way Fair Use policies apply is if we show the movie during direct instruction, for academic purposes.
- It's a legal doctrine that allows for the use of copyrighted materials in certain situations such as education, news commentary, research and more.
- What's Fair Use? Nothing about this sounds fair to me.
- Well, this is education so we should be legal.
- True but like I said there are rules to Fair Use such as the purpose. In this case, we aren't using the Disney movie for teaching but for entertainment and that not only violates Fair Use policy but is also unfair to the original creators. They copyright their work to prevent it from being used without their permission, which can affect its market value.

- That's a great question for our school librarian. She's the expert in our school on all things copyright. Let's go ask her!

- I'm happy to help and glad you asked. Many teachers don't realize that I'm the person in the school most familiar with copyright laws.

- You aren't alone Ms. Smith. Lots of teachers and students think that if they find something on the internet, it means they are free to use it without permission! Or that as long as they cite their source, they are protected from copyright infringement. Others wrongly assume that if they purchase a movie and use it in a classroom, it's legal to use. These are all very common misconceptions
- What I want every teacher to know is that when in doubt, ask your school librarian! I can create a quick lesson on copyright best practices and digital citizenship for teachers and students. - In this case, I would forgo the Disney movie. Instead, come to my office and let me show you what Creative Commons are- it's millions of online resources shared by an online community, all of which are free to use without copyright.
