January 1st 1942, a good day to start my diary which I call 'The Life and Times of Silvey Chan.' My name is Silvey Chan, I'm 12 years old, and I live at 45 Greys Avenue, Auckland, New Zealand. In my family there is my Ba, Ma, brothers - Dai Gor and Day-Day, sisters - Soong and Chuen, and my grandfather Ah Yeh. My heritage is Chinese but I was born in New Zealand.

Me to Silvey.
I'm going to miss Wellesley Street School Judy.
My best friend is Judy Brown. We are almost like twins, except in appearance we are complete opposites. Feeling sad about my school closing down - it's like another home where I learn and can experience enjoyment.

Weirdo
Rations
My parents run a shop, and today I was serving. A young, tall, skinny Chinese boy was leaning against the wall. He acted weird, and said See ya later, in a cocky sort of way. Manilla in the Philippines fell to the Japanese a few days ago. War is all anyone talks about these days especially at my house. Rationing has started - tea, sugar, and clothing are to be rationed.
