  • The protestant reformation was the 16th century series of religious actions challenging the Roman Catholic church that led to the establishment of the Protestant churches. Led by Martin Luther. And later, King Henry VIII with the English Reformation.
  • How was it religious?
  • I noticed that the Church was selling indulgences. So I took a stand.
  • I wanted the church to go back to it's roots and follow the Bible.
  • In my theses I expressed my concerns to the Arch Bishop of Mainz about the sale of indulgences in the church and the wholly false impressions which the people have conceived from the indulgences
  • With the help of the new invention the printing press, I printed my 95 theses and nailed them to the Church doors.
  • Goal: Return the church to the simplicity of scripture
  • I needed a male heir, but my wife kept having daughters.
  • How was it political?
  • To fulfill my need for a heir I wanted to divorce my wife Catherine for Anne. Unfortunately, divorce was not acceptable in the Roman Catholic Church unless granted by the Pope
  • So I broke from the Roman Catholic Church and established the Church of England in the Act of Supremacy in 1534
  • In addition to being able to divorce freely, since I was the head of the Church all of the wealth from it went to the monarchy
  • Goal: To be able to divorce freely and have wealth from the church go to the monarchy
