- The protagonist is in Charleston, South Carolina, waiting for a ship to go to his home in New York. While waiting for the wind and tides to be okay, he is told that a ship is going to sail in the middle of June. He gets curious about who else is going to be on the ship, so he reads the list of passengers and sees that his good friend Cornelius Wyatt is traveling with his wife, whom the protagonist hadn't met.
- Falling Action
- The protagonist boards the ship and realizes that Cornelius had booked three cabins besides his cabin; one for him and his wife, one for his two sisters, and one that was empty until two men brought a long box with the words WYATT and New York written in them. What was inside the box was a mystery for everyone.
- Resolution
- Cornelius dead wife was inside the box.
- What was inside the oblong box'?
- Due to bad weather and strong winds, the ship hits some of the sharp rocks on the coastline and starts to sink. Everyone was told to leave the ship immediately, and everyone did, except for Cornelius, who didn't want to leave his box behind. The protagonist asks him if the box was more important than his life, Cornelius starts shouting his answer, filled with madness.
- Theme
- Trying to move the box, Cornelius and the box fell into the sea and never came up again. After a few minutes, the ship sank completely into the sea, the wind blew the rowboats to the shore. Finally, the passengers were safe.
- After a month of what happened, the protagonist and the captain of the ship met again and talked about Cornelius and his box. The captain said that he knew the box would bring bad luck since the dead wife of Cornelius, who had died a day before the ship sailed, was inside the box. It turned out, Cornelius loved his wife very much, so he couldn't leave her behind.
- Deep love can cause people to become mad and do crazy things without thinking.
