- Man vs. Man: This is man vs. man because the mother and the father are in a conflict during court. They are currently going into divorce. In the text it states, "A tearing, ugly word that meant fights and yelling, lawyers-God, he thought, how he hated lawyers who sat with theircomfortable smiles and tried to explain to him in legal terms how all that he lived in was coming apart-and the breaking and shattering of all the solid things."
- Man vs. Self: This is Man vs. Self because when the pilot has a heart attack, Brian has to fly the plane. When Brian is trying to fly the plane, he has many thoughts to himself but he has to fight them off. Brian is trying to fly the plane by himself. In the text it states, "The plane. Somehow the plane was still flying. Seconds had passed, nearly a minute, and the plane flew on as if nothing had happened and he had to do something, had to do something but did not know what. Help."
- Man vs. Nature: This is Man vs. Nature because Brian lands by the river and needs to find food and water. He tries to find food and eventually finds a raspberry bush to pick and eat from. In the text it states, "Raspberries. These he knew because there were some raspberry bushes in the park and he and Terry were always picking and eating them when they biked past."
