- Douglass and some other slaves are working in the fields late in the afternoon, dripping with sweat and very tired. The slave master, Mr. Covey, sneaks up on them from behind a tree to make sure they are working diligently. They are surprised and try to avoid getting whipped.
- Ha, ha! Come, come! Dash on, dash on!
- “We're working very hard, Mr. Covey! Me and Frederick have been plowing the fields without pausing!”
- Mr. Covey tried to sneak up on Douglass early in the morning as he was tending to the horses. He wanted to tie him up and beat him as punishment for earlier misbehaving. Douglass was fed up and decided to fight back by grabbing Covey by the neck.
- Do you mean to persist in your resistance?
- I do. You have used me like a brute for six months. I am determined to be used no longer.
- After fighting Mr. Covey in the barn for two hours, Douglass feels more like his old self. Beating Covey in a fight makes him feel confident and determined that he won't allow white people to torture him any longer. He says he is now fixed after being broken by Mr. Covey and forgetting all about freedom and reading.
- I won't let Covey, or any white man, hurt me ever again! Nobody will ever whip me, unless I am dead.
