Kate ImenMr. KakuPeriod 5 5/1/23Things Fall Apart EssayWhere are we able to identify loyalty and values in our lives? How do these discoveries define us? The novel titled Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe follows the rocky path of life through a small town called Umofia. The novel examines family troubles, religion, and values, as well as achievement and adherence. The novel represents the larger values of people and how they adapt to function in certain societies. Achebe utilizes figurative language and symbolism to cast a light on the significance of indifference when one explores their values as one navigates their way through life. Unoka is the father of Okonkwo. Despite his talent as a musician, in the novel, he is portrayed as an indolent and careless person, as he accumulates debt and brings humiliation to his family. Throughout the narrative, Okonkwo is haunted by the reputation his father carries to him through his previous mistakes in his life, he holds a terrible reputation in Umofia. Unoka on the other hand never had any intention to disparage his family, he simply seemed to find no pleasure in anything other than leisure, parties, and music. Unoka’s existence revolves around his passion for music and the practice of his hobbies. What Unoka can't seem to get himself to do is work, despite the fact that his family is on the verge of starvation and he has a mountain of outstanding debts. The message Achebe actively speaks for is first introduced when Unoka is mentioned through the words of his son. Okonkwo states “He always said that whenever he saw a dead man’s mouth he saw the folly of not eating what one had in one’s lifetime. Unoka was, of course, a debtor, and he owed every neighbor some money, from a few cowries to quite substantial amounts.” This quote identifies the reason why Okonkwo does not favor his father as well as how Unoka stands out from the community itself. “Unoka was never happy when it came to wars. He was in fact a coward and could not bear the sight of blood. And so he changed the subject and talked about music, and his face beamed. He could hear in his mind’s ear the blood-stirring and intricate rhythms of the ekwe and the udu and the ogene, and he could hear his own flute weaving in and out of them, decorating them with a colorful and plaintive tune.” This quote emphasizes the importance of Unoka’s values, despite how they may differ from what is expected in the village. Nwyoe, more than any other character, embodies an innocent child who is well aware of his surroundings and perplexed by the seemingly arbitrary cruelties taking place around him. His defining feature, even more than that of some female characters, is his truly remarkable ability to emphasize and sympathize. Nwyoe struggles with the constant pressure from his father to stray from female traits and become a traditional male in the community. Achebe's portrayal of the significance of indifference is seen through the actions of this young man. A major example of this takes place in Okonkwos description of his son, he states “You have all seen the great abomination of your brother. Now he is no longer my son or your brother. I will only have a son who is a man, who will hold his head up among my people" (172). Nywoes father solely disowns him because he chooses to follow a path untradtional to his culture. Okonkwos comment conveys a somber, irate, and unpleasant atmosphere, which helps the reader to develop an understanding of how highly the Ibo culture values patronage in all aspects of life. It is of great importance for all people of Umofia to follow the traditional path, therefore those who stray posses indifference. In conclusion, I feel what is truly remarkable about this novel is the author's ability to sustain very specific opinionated themes about each character in the book. The purpose of each individual character in the book is represented over and over again by the truly mesmerizing characterization and diction. “Sometimes it takes a long time to sound like yourself” - Miles Davis.
