  • I wanted to get a better understanding on a topic I'm doing research on and I know you are the right person to ask.
  • Hey Carol, I am really glad I ran into you.
  • Sure, I'm on my way to my classroom. I have free time to chat now because my students went to Spanish class.
  • Hey Jane, I am glad to see you as well.
  • What can you tell me about a pioneer in education by the name of Friedrich Froebel?
  • One of his major contributions to education was the creation of Kindergarten. Here is where play was considered the most important activity with regards to the development of a child (Essa,2011).
  • Here is what I know about Friedrich Froebel.
  • If not for Friedrich, I would not have a class of students.
  • Jane, there is more in which he contributed. In him seeing the value of play, Friedrich's play theory was constructed on what he coins as the Froebel Gifts and Occupations (Correia and Fisher, 2014).
  • Carol, you just mentioned about Gifts and Occupations. What exactly are those all about?
  • I am sure you have some of these materials in your classroom centers. However, you are in luck because we used some in our Mathematics lesson earlier today.
  • According to Essa (2011), Froebel created precise materials which were focused on sensory recognition and play. These materials worked along side a curriculum which he also developed.
  • Friedrich's gifts were various series of blocks, which were modified and are what we use in classes currently. In accordance with Correia and Fisher (2014), Friedrich's gifts were to bring about expression of ideas while developing critical thinking within children. This was all done through play.

  • Who would have thought that manipulatives such as blocks were used centuries before our time.
  • So far in our discussion, I seem to be hearing this reoccurring word 'play'. It has me wondering, what a curriculum without play would be like verses one with play as its base.
  • Carol, I must say Friedrich Froebel has made a positive impact in Early Childhood Education.
  • Well, that has me thinking too. My students will be back soon, then it would be time for outside play. I am sure Gina would be able to help us with that.
  • I could not agree with you more.
