Superman and MeAuthor: Sherman AlexieBy: Rubee Breish
The Spokane Indian Reservation
...I was three years old, a Spokane Indian boy living with his family on the Spokane Indian Reservation in eastern Washington state (pg1, para 1). and I had a brother and three sisters. We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear and government surplus food (pg 1,para 1).
I didn't have the vocabulary to say paragraph but I realized that a paragraph was a fence that held words (pg 1, para 3). and Once again, I pretend to read the words and say aloud, 'I am breaking down the door' In this way, I learned to read (pg 2, para 1).
A little Indian boy teaches himself to read at an early age and advances quickly (pg 2, para 2) and I refused to fail. I was smart...arrogant...lucky... I read anything that had words and paragraphs (pg 2, para 4). and These days, I write novels, short stories, and poems (pg 3, para 1).
Sherman Alexie goes from I was trying to save my life. to I am trying to save our lives (pg 3, para 1). and I visit schools and teach creative writing to Indian kids...I visit the schools as often as possible (pg 3, para 1).
Creative Writing 101
The theme of the story could be put as, We are in charge of our own destines, and it is up to us only to take control of our lives and fix what we don't like. A quote that can support this theme is, I refused to fail... I read anything that had words and paragraphs. I read with equal parts joy and desperation. I loved those books, but I also knew that love had only one purpose. I was trying to save my life (pg 2-3, para 4).
