- I am the king and I should be the one in charge of choosing the new bishop! Its my land.
- I, the Pope, should be the only one who could choose church officials. Kings have no power to choose any church officials.
- That Pope! I need to remove that terrible Pope Gregory VII from power. I can bribe anyone I want. This is my kingdom, I can do whatever I want. He will lose everything very soon!
- That king tried to remove me! I will excommunicate him and lose his power, position, and title. He will regret everything he did to me. This is my church I hire who I want not the king!

- I won't let that pope remove my power and position! I have to do something. To diminish his power, and ruin him.
- King Henry IV stood barefoot in the snow for three days outside Gregory's castle begging for forgiveness. After three days, Pope Gregory forgave him, but German nobles chose a new emperor. He returned to Germany and won the nobles support. In 1080, Gregory excommunicated him again, but this time it didn't work. Henry brought an army into Italy. Gregory was chased out of Rome.
