- Tally and Shay make acquaintance.

- "She was glad Shay had taken her out to the ruins. If nothing else, the mess left by the Rusties proved that things could go terribly wrong if you weren't careful,"(Westerfeld 71). This is important because Tally is learning that things can go wrong. New Pretty City is meant for things to go right, so seeing that things can go wrong is eye-opening for her.
- Betrayal to the City
- ""We don't have to look like everyone else, Tally, and act like everyone else. We've got a choice. We can grow up any way we want,""(Westerfeld 86). They do not get the choice of how they look or act in New Pretty Town, so it is good that Tally is finding out that there is another option.
- Fire in the Smoke
- "Once in the Smoke, she could activate the pendant and be home within a day, maybe within hours. All the food and the clothes she would ever need, hers for the asking. Her face pretty at long last, and Peris and all their old friends around her," (Westerfeld 184).This is significant because at this point she is so sure she will activate the tracker right when they get to the Smoke, but that doesn't last long.
- Admitting Defeat (or so you think)
- "No, I had to do it like this. I had to burn it. To know for sure,"(Westerfeld 267). This shows that Tally became not so certain after all about leaving the Smoke. She decided to stay.
- "She remembered what the Specials had said to her more than once: We don't want to hurt you, but we will if we have to," (Westerfeld 316). This is important because if they felt like they had to hurt the Smoke, they must have been threatened by it. You wouldn't think the Smoke could be a threat to a huge place like New Pretty Town, but it must have been a big enough deal to burn it down like they did.
- "Tally smiled. At least she was causing trouble to the end," (Westerfeld 406). This scene is important because Tally is ready to cure the brain lesions that Maddy and Az discovered. She turns herself in after giving consent to Maddy to fix the lesions once she has them, but not telling the Special Circumstances workers that she is going to get fixed. She is causing trouble to the end, indeed.
