  • Falling Action
  • After sobbing into her sister, Josephine's arms, Mrs. Mallard goes up to her room. Still weeping, she wanted to be alone. She would have no one follow her.
  • Resolution
  • While sobbing, Mrs. Mallard looks out the window. Blankly, she stares. Mrs. Mallard then comes to the realization that she is no longer held down by a husband, and is now free. ¨Free, free!¨ she says to herself.
  • While Mrs. Mallard was still upstairs, Josephine told her to open the door to her room and let her in. Mrs. Mallard told her no, and continued to bask in her newfound freedom. Meanwhile, Mr. Mallard was walking through the front door.
  • Josephine finally entered her room, but she was too late. Mrs. Mallard died of a heart attack. The doctors say she died from ¨joy that kills¨.
