  • RISING ACTION
  • The main character Annemarie, her best friend Ellen, and her little sister Kirsti are children during WW2 who live in Denmark. They are dashing down the street when they are stopped and questioned by two German soldiers.
  • RISING ACTION
  • Peter, who is Annemarie's families friend hides Ellen's parents who are Jewish. This is because the Nazis are trying to send all of the Jewish people in Denmark to concentration camps. So, Ellen sleeps over at Annemarie's house because her parents don't want to risk her getting killed if they get caught. That night, the Nazis searched Annemarie's home looking for Ellen's family, the Johannsen's. Luckily, Annemarie remembers Ellen's star of David necklace before they search her room and they pretend that Ellen is Annemarie's deceased sister, Lise and they get away with it
  • CLIMAX
  • Annemarie's mom takes Ellen, Annemarie, and Kirsti to Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house near the shore because it is not safe in Copenhagen. The reason they go to Uncle Henrik's house is because he smuggles Jewish people in his fishing boat across the Baltic Sea into neutral Sweden meaning they are going to try to smuggle Ellen to Sweden. On the train ride there, they get interrogated by a Nazi soldier, but luckily get past him.
  • RESOLUTION
  • When they get to Uncle Henrik's house, there are a bunch of other people who are Jewish, including Ellen's parents. Nazi officers called the Gestapo, who are specially assigned to finding Jewish people search their house. Luckily, they fool them and the Jewish people, Ellen, and her parents, go to the boat in the dark to cross the Baltic Sea to Sweden. Annemarie and Kirsti are left alone for a while, because everyone else who wasn't a Jewish person was helping them get to the boat.
  • When Annemarie's Mom gets back she discovers that a package Uncle Henrik needed to hide the Jewish people's scent from dogs, was forgotten, and Annemarie's moms ankles were injured, so Annemarie decided to deliver it herself. The only problem was, it was dark and she had to run through the woods. On the way there, she is stopped by Nazis with a Dog, where they search her lunchbox where the package is hidden. They open the Package, but luckily, it just looks like a cloth, so they don't think anything of it. Annemarie makes up a story and gets past them, delivers the package, and the Jewish people are able to cross the Baltic Sea to Sweden.
  • The war ends, and Annemarie anticipates reuniting with Ellen.
