- "My eyes popped open, and I sat bolt upright. My heart raced. I was perspiring, and my hands were clammy with nervousness." I had stayed asleep and mother had left.
- I must wait for mother, but I will die
- "I leaped up and ran outside." "Eomoni!" "I shouted heading first to the outhouse and throwing open the door" I had to go look for mother so I went to the market and train station but found no trace of her.

- "Who are you"
- I came home as I couldnt find mother, but I saw a note that said " I am going to Aunt's house to get food and I will return in seven days. You must stay at home. If there is no water you must eat salt and drink water" Mom had left and there was nothing else that I could do.
- "I cant take care of you"
- "I'm blind. Help. Help!" my face looked like a balloon as it had retained so much water and I could barely open my eyes. I had to leave the house and go for help.
- I got to Yung-Bums house and fainted. Before getting there I felt that I was going to faint and die in the cold ice, but I had to keep on living.
- Yung-Bum helped me with some food and got me to the market where he would leave me to my luck to survive, before leaving I could hear him say that he couldnt take care of me anymore. and I simply sat there with no idea of what to do next.
